The trial of Julius and Ethel Rosenberg began this week in 1951. The couple was charged and found guilty of “conspiracy to hand the ‘secrets’ of the atomic bomb to Russia.” They were executed in the electric chair. Two years later, McCarthyism and anti-Communist hysteria reached its height in American society.

It happened last night that I talked with roommates referring to McCarthyism, when I found later that it was exactly 56 years ago that the McCarthy era erupted in US. I'm not sure if any society has to go through such a dark journey, but what I'm sure is that we could struggle to win the battle for democracy in the end.
